The Haenyeo Project
The Haenyeo Project is an eight-hour coming-of-age/grounded sci-fi series set in a small town in Northern Ontario in the 1990s. Its style could be defined as “The Shape of Water meets Parasite.” A raw, organic and dark fairy tale. We’ll explore the conflicts and struggles of a rebellious and intelligent teenager who wants to find her place in the world, but we’ll also dive into the world of Haenyeo. They live in Jeju Island, South Korea. They are worldwide known female divers that harvest seafood, using no breathing equipment and holding their breath for minutes at a time, challenging the frigid waters of the Pacific. The oldest Haenyeo are over 80 years old and have been diving for more than 60 years. Although this practice dates back centuries, it is fading away. Are Haenyeo destined to disappear?
